My Future Staring Back At Me

When I was young, I remember thinking old people were kind of scary. Most young people do. Perhaps it is the reality of our future that we deny, even then. As a hairdresser, I now find that I love my elderly guests the most. I enjoy their time with me, find them adorable, and find myself hoping I am that cute, when that age.

I had a regular guest once, who was a hun.dred and sev,en years old...Yes, you read that right...a hundr.ed and sev.en. I don't think I want t.o reach that age, but likely, she didn't want t.o either. We don't get t.o decide those things and no, I don't believe there is some book somewhere with the expiration date listed. We get what we get. I asked her once what her secret was, and her sister answered for me,
"Our family was comfortable, she was a librarian and never married, nor had "
The realization st.ruck m.e that it was lack of stress she referred t.o , and I laughed and remarked, "Well, I guess I'm screwed." which she said, " M.e too sister"

My new favorite is a little petite woman with blaze red hair. I color it to be vibrant and match her pistol-like personality. She is so sweet, adorable, and funny that I want t.o wrap my arms about her and squeeze, but it is a pandemic, so I just squeeze her forearm lightly. Instead we talk, we laugh, and I enjoy her delight when she checks out my work at the end.

"Are you dating anyone?" the sweet old woman smiled, her weathered creases deepening, as she peered through her glasses.
"I have gone on dates...It was too soon for the longest time. Then I met Narcissistic Fuckwit with an accent, we both know where that went. And now? I've just been working on me." I kept curling the pretty red hair that was left.
"Narcissistic Fuckwit?" Joan cackled. "Well, if calling him that makes you feel better, I think that's a perfect name" She smiled her beatific smile at the mirror image.
"I figure that when the right one comes along, it will happen and I won't be able t.o stop that. Might as well enjoy my solitude now."

The wise old woman thought about what I had said and was quiet a moment
"It's too late for me now...I never wanted another after mine died. But, you are young yet, just a baby. And, you deserve that feeling again."
I looked back into her mirror image, "You're probably right Joan...and thank you from the bottom of my heart" My eyes welled a little, because her kindness touched me. Her wisdom wrapped me in a soothing blanket of sisterly kindness, that only a woman can share with another woman.

Yeah, I love the elderly women that grace my chair, as they are my glimpse into my future...

When I'm Sixty-Four
The Beatles
When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four
You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you
I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four
Every summer we can rent a cottage
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck and Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

I just love this story. My hairdresser has a client that is 98 and she so reminds me of your Joan. She does have a boyfriend now that she shares time with but oh my those words of wisdom she utters.

Don’t Forget Me
Harry Nilsson

And when were older and full of cancer
It doesnt matter now, come on get happy
Cause nothing lasts forever
But I will always love you

Dont forget me, please dont forget me
Make it easy only just for a little while
You know I think about you
Let me know you think about me, too

There's a quote that I love, from the author Terry Pratchett....
"Inside every old person there's a young person wondering what the hell happened."

Your client is just like a person in this song. "My Back Pages" is a song written by Bob Dylan and included on his 1964 album Another Side ... "Ah, but I was so much older then: I'm younger than that now".

"One Big Sky Covers Us All Equally"

Sorry I missed this when it was first posted. It's beautiful and the sentiment is poetic. We are all going to be there someday. I plan to try to arrive with some grace and dignity. ( and kicking and screaming a bit.)XXXX

P.s. the photo is beautiful.
