Growing Up In The Segregated North Born in 1951 in WNY, I was pretty much isolated from less fortunate people. My grandparents were immigrants (legal) and came at a time when there weren't all the gov't programs to assist them. Maternal and paternal ancestors managed to provide for my parents and in turn my parents provided for their offspring. In the 1950's and 1960's there was a large shift of poor African Americans seeking work not available to them in the south. I can't blame them. My elementary school days were isolated from the poor. However, when I entered Junior High School (now called Middle School) that changed. One memory from the time was when I was in gym class, there were no lockers at the time and the students hung their clothes on hooks. On a couple of occasions, someone took various articles of mine and left what I assume were theirs. I never reported the substitutions to the gym teacher because I didn't want to get anyone else in trouble. Also, I didn't want to be labeled a snitch with my classmates. My mother, a very fastidious person, never mentioned it to me when she noticed the soiled and ripped garments. She simply replaced my missing garb. This was my first realization of the stratification of our society. Comments welcome. |

And today? You're just a suck-up who never knew where he belonged! Did you enjoy playing with them? What did you do together? Did you go to the cinema, to concerts, go on trips, go camping, have barbecues together? You probably cried alone in your room and didn't understand your mother! You didn't understand the others either because they took something from you! Cry baby cry, at your age, do you want absolution? You're not a heroic lone fighter who stands up for what's good! You have no idea about women's rights! You have no idea how life works! Economically, politically and socially, you're a complete zero! You are not able to see the truth and that's why you suffer! My opinion is that you only have one goal, you would sell your soul for it, you have already done that! You are trying to hide your disgusting intentions under the cloak of pity! I repeat it again, you have no idea how life works, you have chosen an enemy and that is your only goal, to harm that person! You yourself have admitted that you have a lot of time and nothing to do! Damn it, you're driving me crazy! I was in 7th grade and got an award for my craft talent! The class teacher wanted to reward me and gave me a present! I opened it and there was a book called "How should we behave"!!!! I saw the book, read the title and threw it at her feet! There was silence in the room!!! Damn sensitivity! We finished 8th grade and each of us had to make an important decision in our lives! They all wanted to celebrate and talked about cake and lemonade! I said I'd take care of it, you start a collection and I'll do the rest... I knew a band, was in their area very often, got food and drinks and then we had a blast! The worst student and I danced in front of the teacher's podium and they applauded! My dance partner was the sexiest of all!!!
