My past … unedited (?) Time to shift gears, just sayin.
The song played as Jake and I walked into darkness and Haag stared at our Ama, pointed then pointed said and no, as she bleated, and went to feed everyone else. Unc stared at the Sheriff, incredulously, and shook his head because no one expected that turn of events
“Why are you asking Jack, and I don't know how many kills he had, all I remember is that it was enough to help, which is, was, his job.”
Silence as they stared at each other at watched and then the party as it wound down, with the music that Sam chose as my uncle looked at him, waiting, because none of us liked shit. Jack spit, and looked at me uncle as the girls began to focus, and waited because there was no problem and if there was they wanted to address it, no uniforms and all that. If it wasn't then they wanted to know … wtf … because this was our day, so they watched and waited, as Ellen walked up and hugged him. We had issues early on during Samhain but word spread which was why we didn't need uniforms, but they still watched and waited, because the cops had become … untenable.
“Jack, how's Helen?” She kissed his cheek because the girls were better diplomats than us but we had excuses because what we all came up during times when extending a hand meant that you might die.
“She's fine Ellen, and it's nice to see you. I was just telling Bill that I was retiring, end of the term, and we were remembering that terrible winter when we all had to hunt and how amazing you nephew was.” Silence as Ellen looked at her husband, then nodded.
“That's pretty quick, Jack. You have anyone in mind to support? We won't get involved with your decisions but it is a huge change for the community because you've been here a long while, and have down a good job in our estimation.” Bill nodded.
“Thanks for that, and I have a couple of ideas, but I think there needs to be new blood, at least a fresh perspective because of all of those … things.” We all nodded at the encroaching condo's that seemed intent on blotting out of the sky. We were pretty safe because were at the end of circle which was the smartest thing ever did for our family, and we had the fund … earned and ill-gotten … but in the end we all worked together as family, like our ancestors did so that we could survive. The music stopped signifying the end of another Samhain and if past was prologue then there would be a lot of folks climbing the fence to the path that led to Henry's, and right on cue Sara smiled and waved as she showed them the way so that she could keep them safe because Colorado had made both weed, and 'shrooms, legal along with alcohol, and then was all the illegal shit. We smiled and waved then looked at each other as Jack looked at Bill.
“He killed our limit, Bill across the board … for all of us. I've been thinking about your Daniel and the past and how fucked things are now even here, now, pardon my French Ellen.” Silence, as she smiled. “He, alone, fed enough people, more than my memory can even imagine these days, and we didn't do any of that Bill, we watched. Your family is old school, William, and we've known each other for a long time and, yeah, there have been some things that I didn't want to know but it is the West after all, yeah.?” They all laughed and nodded.
“I don't think Daniel could get elected, maybe he could because he's younger but he's rarely around. I know that you could because there are still more of us than them and there's more industrial and open space is in the County, but they're trying to change.” He looked at both of them scared of the future for the first time in his life as this song played into all us and he heard for the first time.
“Helen and I would like you to think about running. I can make you a Deputy and spend the next year showing you the in's and out's of the job … the fucking politics … you already know the people, and they know you.” He didn't apologize that time but stared at my aunt and uncle as Helen walked up, smiling.
My uncle looked at him and nodded as he thought because it was our home, and there were always issues with the people in power, everywhere in the clans, because they trying to take too much, or abuse it for self interest instead for the community. I was tearing some of those boundaries down because it was needed, and because I could, but that annoyed people in power and that was we had folks like Maria and why I was walking with Jake as the sheriff tried to talk my Uncle into running because I shot a bunch of animals back when I was kid, animals I barely remembered because there had been so much shooting in my life, as the song played.
He was right though because the strength of any place was in the community … the people. We learned that over centuries in our family's, and the clans, but they were starting to forget that like everyone else. The people Maria worked with thought differently than we did, than I did, and thought I was their property because I was born in their country … the clans were leaning in that direction as well. I wasn't having that because it was stupid even if prevalent because power warps most people. I wasn't sure why we didn't care about it as a family but I suspected because the amount of pain in our past was more than any of us could deal with so that was kept hidden from us for as long as possible. I smiled because my Uncle would make a good Sheriff, and we need always needed those folks being liaisons with the greater community. It would definitely make things interesting in Denver.
“Tell me about the kiln, son?”
He smiled and talked 90 miles a minute as we walked and he told me about the task that I was suppose to help Haag with. We walked around for hours into, and then out of, the dawn and stood at the sea as I smiled because I had a good and strong family as we waited because I could feel them coming.
Why are we here, Da'?
“Because this will decide if we're going to war with Elves son, again.”
He stared at me, along with everyone else as they said … “WTF.” Lisbet and Karin came out of the sea, followed by some of the Sirens, and walked up to us. The sirens were not a small contingent, even after I released them, and Lisbet and Karin, being a “thing,” only complicated things so I had no idea what would happen but Jake needed to know because all this shit was happening on Iceland and both he and Haagerstadt, were the males of our family on Iceland. It's what the clans wanted, and what I also wanted because they considered Iceland home and it made Chloe happy. The clans wanted us to stay there, maybe Norway and Denver, because they wanted us out of their business, which we understood … I certainly did ... but that was about to change in an expansive way as we watched people that we loved walk toward us. I hugged both of them, and smiled at the Sirens as they followed, and looked at all of them me as the song started to play down smiled because I loved the Junkies.
Lisbet and Karin were mostly one in the same at this point so it didn't matter who spoke because they cared about the Sirens. Jake was new to all of this because things were never linear with us, and they were too young to be in any event, as Karin stared me because she was the Elf in the relationship with Elisabeth. She stared at Lisbet and back me then as she said...
“Do you think that you helped us, Danael?”
Aerin, Sara, and Taiiko, growled as they tried to shift because Lisbet and Karin, with the remaining sirens, would be a force to be reckoned with but I huffed, and stopped them. They all screamed and I had a tally going of getting hit as Jack and Bill looked at each just like I was staring at Karin, and smiled.
“I think I helped you as much as I could but those witches did a lot of damage to all of you, and you have every right to hate Ama, but Tirithe or whoever that plays out to be, was linked to Thurakk. She took a step back and looked at Lisbet. “I'd like you to ponder the ramifications of your actions with the Sirens, but also with families that were broken apart and are trying to be rebuilt, but and with your Queen, yeah, because She is the one to guide you. Ama is older than most of us, almost all of us at this point, and I'd like to think that she, they, have learned from their mistakes … because we all make them, yeah? There's no hurry because she is a sheep after all.” Karin looked at me then smiled as they walked away to chat as,
Jack looked at my aunt and uncle ... “You know what I'm sayin', yeah?” They nodded. “You want a 'pendejo' in that role?”
They shook their head no as I looked at my son, Lisbet and Karin, and they walked up to us because they learned that the sea was a pretty fucking important place and they had power over it. I smiled because we all had to learn about power. Jake watched but life wasn't always this hard, I hoped, and I was going to teach the girls about this as well because they were dragon riders, but he was the oldest, and life brought us here, so there was that. I stood, and waited, as everyone watched as both Lisbet and Karin ran at me as they jumped, laughing, and we fell into the snow as they hugged me because it had been too long since we had spent much time together. Jake watched as we all laughed and then stood as Lisbet looked at me, seriously, then pointed east.
“There are subrameanies in that lake, and they are mean, just sayin.” I nodded as she smiled because they hated “subrameanies. “What should we do?”
Jake watched, intently, along with everyone else as she looked at me like I was insane because I wasn't panicked but I wanted to make a point to them because they knew what was going on under the surface of the water but not that about what happened above it. I understood more about that and that was why they needed me as much as I needed them … they were, the sirens too, unique in our family, but they were understanding power and I needed to tread carefully. Silence as Lisbet stared at me, because I couldn't deny that she had become a force of her own, and she felt it. They both stared at me, then each other as I said …
“First of all, there are good submarines in that lake … it's called the Baltic Sea … and they are our friends. However, you are right that there are “subrameanies” there, and in the other “lake” you know as the Black Sea and, well, we're going to have to… sheesh … we're going to have fuck some shit up because the world is losing it's focus and we have to hold it for them until they get their shit straight, Loves … just sayn'.”
Lisbet stared at me, intently, then nodded as they looked at each and clapped, then laughed, because the Sirens were getting bored. I huffed and hugged them as we all walked back home to have breakfast with the folks I needed to speak with so much for simple and easy, and then there was Denver.
