I'm a former disco queen, a disco duck and funky mama! I've loved disco even since I was I was a tyke. I was born at the beginning of it in "65. Grew up with it and can't get enough of it to this day. By The Way: You forgot the King of Disco: Barry White.
Also Billie Jean isn't a disco track.
fuck yeah! Barry White!
@spunkycumfun Barry White is always worth a revisit.
There's a broad crossover between disco and funk and since I've always been a fan of funk (Parliament, Cameo, Gap Band, Ohio Players etc) so disco was always right there too on my favorites list. I can't dance tho, so just did the white girl step (step right, feet together, step left feet together, repeat endlessly to the beat) every time.
I definitely went through a disco era - I would say it was heaviest during my first three years of college. Then when I was a senior, I discovered Elvis Costello's first album at the student union music lounge and I took a pretty hard turn toward new wave/pop/punk music.
I guess my critique of disco music is that most of it is designed for dancing, not listening. Take your first clip - 7 minutes of that would be great if I were out on the dance floor having fun with friends. It's pretty repetitive and monotonous if I'm sitting in front of my computer listening to it, lol.
I do still adore Earth Wind and Fire, though.
@spunkycumfun Groovejet is... pleasant. I would enjoy it if it came on the radio as I was driving on a sunny day. It's probably not something I would seek out to listen to. And the man and woman in the video are both attractive - are they the Italian DJ and English singer? Or actors?
Ahh hah! nice blog!
Since few have the vast appreciation of music as it do, I only exclude contemporary xtian music.
I would never say any music sucks. That is a narrow minded opinion of people who can't open themselves to experience new things. Just like eating your vegetables, some things need to be an acquired taste.
Disco, specifically was my first rebellion. I ended up at the blunt end of a backhand for listening to disco while my family members called it (i won't say or even write what they called disco).
Of course, that only sealed the deal for me, anything that was not "classic rock" was my groove. Disco and punk rock being on the top of that rebellion.
I like born to be alive. i love disco music.
I grew up in the 70s and loathed disco music. Over time, a few tracks have risen, phoenix-like, above the barren wastelands of the 70s disco scene and are tollerable (if not actually good!) and you mention some. This left me with an impression of the utter yuckyness of 70s music which endured. However, with age comes wisdom and I discovered that there were many bastard siblings of this music - Mud, Slade, TRex, 10CC, ABBA (pop rather than disco, IMHO) but, of course: Genesis, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, America, The Hollies and (as the "Best of Hits" would have it - "many, many more" ).
For thos not aware of it, Johnnie Walker does an excellent 2 hour 70s slot on Sunday on BBC Radio 2 (which can be picked up online) that underlines how good much of the music od the day was.
To end on a note of accord, I am sure we will agree that "The Bay City Rollers" were just utter crap
I think you and I have had this debate before. I'm not against disco, a lot of good songs came from the genre. I remember it was the best music to roller skate to on a friday night.
I'd say Earth, Wind and Fire's, September, will always have a place on my playlists. I can confirm my first disco 45 record was, Boogie Oogie Oogie, by Taste of Honey. I was 10. I thought it was pretty cool the two women in the band played the guitar and bass. Didn't see that much. Thanks for the memories!
There were always rock vs disco arguments at the teen club when I was in high school. I liked both, so I didn't see the problem.
Don’t particularly like D.I.S.C.O. reminds me of lots of people banding together to try and destroy someone who doesn’t deserve it
I am curious, how does disco present itself to you that way? What about disco makes you feel that way?
@Valkoinen_Leski just reminds me of a unkind person who I used to know and I had some bad experiences with they were not funky and they played some of those bands especially Michael jackson they absolutely thrashed Michael jackson,I do like beck though and other 80s 90s band’s that could be regarded as disco. Just a phycological connection with something unpleasant in the past that I have to deal with.sorry if I caused any offence to you or any one else,
@Ecor27 we have some context to hang onto, and understand now. Hugs! thanks
@Valkoinen_Leski you are most welcome my sweet and thank you and hugs!
I loved disco music back in the day. A GF and I took disco lessons and became quite good. Disco was fun.
@spunkycumfun no dancing in the hot tub, especially disco dancing.
I am a fan of music period and disco has a special place in my heart. I was coming of age and had my fake ID so I could go clubbin'. I love disco. I bet over the years I've purchased at least a dozen copies of the Sat Night Fever soundtrack (on vinyl) cuz I wore the others out. No foolin'! My favorite of all song has to be "You Should be Dancin'". By the Bee Gees from said soundtrack. But there are so so SO many more. Tony Manero was my hero, I wanted to be him and in my eyes he was the epitome of cool. As far as my dancing ability. I've got some rhythm and can still Hustle with the best of them. In fact, our gym classes were sometimes dance lessons and guess what we were taught? Yep! Disco!!
Disco was more then music, it was a lifestyle. It was fun. To break lose of the negatively of the late 60s and the early 70s. The music was up beat. Our thoughts had brighter outlook . The one thing still around from those days is is this , the Disco Ball !!!
My favorite Disco song is Disco Infernal by the TRAMPPS. It has a great groove and lyrics!
Do you think disco rocks or disco sucks?
One thing we're sure to agree about- Donna Summer was a goddess.
How good of a disco dancer are you?
I've only danced once- on my mother in law's grave.
Young Hearts.. i still have that 45 and actually listened to it today... we used to skate to Le Freak... i made a playlist today that has Cherly Lynn To be Real., Fantastic Voyage, EWand F After the love has gone, lady marmalade, shame... the groove line... im right w ya, oh and donna summer last dance
“I Love the Night Life” Alicia Bridges. Such good times. The fashion, spaghetti strap dresses and high heels. Girls night out was a ton of fun.
What a great blog about Disco Music my friend some
great songs here and the Bee Gees were the men
back in the day.. Especially Barry Gibb such a hot
and sexy man
Do you think disco rocks or disco sucks? I think it rocks!!
If you like disco, what are your favourite disco songs? There are
just so many but the Bee Gees and Donna Summer top my
list of great Disco songs.
How good of a disco dancer are you? I would say I was pretty
good back in the day with the Hustle and the Bump. But my
forte has always been dirty dancing..
I hope you enjoy a very Happy Easter Weekend..
I listened, danced to it and enjoyed the hits; plus, it was easy to play.
But I wasn't disappointed to see it disappear.
@hippiechick1967
It has its place — its good and its bad.
I didn't know this Oddssey and now I like them. Thanks for sharing. Disco rocks!
Disco rocks, period.
You have posted many of my favorites. I was a big Bee Gees fan back in the day.
I can get down, but I wouldn’t say well.
I recall hitting the discos in Brazil when visiting there for work. I couldn't speak much Portuguese, some of the women spoke halting English, but it was so loud none of that mattered!
So yeah, I'm a fan and still occasionally hit the button for "Studio 54" feed on my satellite radio.
