This post, with poll, is about period sex or, more exactly, menstrual sex. We tend to say period here when a woman is having her menses, a term I've only very recently come across.
By menstrual sex, I'm only including penetrative vaginal sex and not other sexual activities that may take place while a woman is menstruating.

According to one article lodged on PubMed in 1996, Koray Tanfer and Sevgi Aral found: "More than one fourth of the women reported that they usually have vaginal intercourse during their menses, and 16% reported that they had vaginal intercourse during their last menstrual period. Proportions of women engaging in this practice were higher among those who reported greater frequency of intercourse and larger numbers of lifetime sex partners."
In an online article published by the BBC in 2018, Ellie Griffiths claimed that women are more sexually aroused during menstruation. She cited one study, though no reference was given, that 55 per cent of 500 participants found menstrual sex to be "natural or awesome" and that 45 per cent thought it was "gross". This research seems a bit ridiculous as I would expect closer to 100 per cent to find pre-menstrual sex to be natural.

I've never knowingly had menstrual sex in advance of sex taking place. I must admit, slightly shamefully, that I've been a little squeamish about having sex while my partner is having a period. My first serious girlfriend always wore pants to bed when she was having a period. Rightly or wrongly, I took that as a sign of no sex.
However, my squeamishness wasn't helped when my first wife demanded sex while she was menstruating and threatened to collect her menstrual blood in a glass and throw it over me. Despite the threat, I didn't have period sex with her. In fact, I didn't have much sex with her thereafter.
Though I've not knowingly had menstrual sex, I realised the morning after that I had menstrual sex on two occasions. First, there was a little bit of blood on my bed sheet, and second there was a lot of my blood on my bedding. I was cool about the latter because the sex was amazing.

It wasn't a frequent occurrence for me and of course, now I haven't had to worry about it since 2010.
When I was younger I used a diaphragm and later a cervical cap for birth control. A side benefit was that I could also put it in before period sex and it would hold back most or all of the flow.

I have had menstrual sex a couple times once accidentally. It was with my first wife and it seemed that having sex got her period started hard. She was not happy about it. It did not bother me and the next time I put down a thick towel.
I had a lover who was post menopausal and she told me she missed having sex during her period. She said she was always super horny then and that was when she had the most intense orgasms. Considering how intense some of them we had together I often wished I could have had period sex with her.

I was always cognizant of when my partner was having her menses. Never had sex during that time with my first ex, After that, if I was in a relationship with a partner who was on her menses and she wanted to have sex, or things got heated and she wanted it during that time, I would oblige. We would take the necessary precaution and lay a towel down or something no to get any blood on the bed and although it was quite messy, we would both wash up afterwards.
I was always told that they were always hornier during that time, and apart from the mess, the sex was always good during that time. I would never initiate sex during that time unless I got a sign from her that she wanted it. I could tell by certain body changes when she was menstruating. If I was horny and initiated and she was dealing with a bad period (ex wife would have bad cramps sometimes that it would make her cry from how painful they were) I would back down and take a raincheck...lol
I had one partner who suffered from very bad menstrual cramps but always offered me on anal sex. I declined her offer as she was in a lot of discomfort.

I wish I had a more enlightened attitude in my younger days but I was pig-ignorant about periods then.
I've never been one of the women whose libido fluctuates during my cycle so I can't speak to that. Usually it's just the mess involved that kept me from wanting to engage in sex while I was having an active flow. My partners never seemed to complain about 4-5 days of blow/hand jobs only each month tho.
It seems churlish for men to complain about a few days of blow- and hand-jobs each month!

Well then, let me add something that just came to mind.
I recall I read somewhere - it was decades ago - I don't remember the source - that orgasming during menstruation was not recommended. Something about the spasms bringing things back up into the uterus, and that being a dangerous thing, or some such nonsense.
I can understand women not feeling comfortable or sexy during their periods because that is how we have been indoctrinated to feel and respond. And that recommendation to NOT orgasm when menstruating was so convincing I actually believed I may be harming myself if I continued to orgasm when on my period.
I had a uni room-mate who was brought up to not touch her holy book during her period days. She would ask me to open it so she could read her prayers, and I would turn the pages for her.

The first couple of days of my period, when the flow was heaviest and cramps the worst, I had no interest in sex. The remainder of the week, I don't recall any change in my libido. It has been my partners that avoided it

I read one article which stated that a woman's libido sometimes increases during a period. I don't know how true that statement is.
@spunkycumfun I'm sure that for some women, at some time, it's true. If I were to guess a reason, it would have less to do with hormones and more to do with assuming (incorrectly) that she can't get pregnant.

@superbjversion2 I had a heightened libido during my period. It could have been hormonal as I also had erotic dreams during sleep. That was one indication I was expecting my period. I also think it could have a simpler physiological causation, increased blood circulation. What I do remember is the general pelvic area was extra sensitive and any action even pressing my thighs together or crossing my legs aroused me more than usual. I didn't experience any pain or nausea like many other women. I understand how pain or discomfort would in fact make period sex very unwelcome for others.

The experiences I've had with menstrual sex were positive, as it seems to be true that it amps up a woman's horniness. And I must admit, it's not such a bad feeling...very warm. Yes I had menstrual penetrative sex, but that depended on how my period came. Sometimes I didn’t feel like doing it during the two or three central days, and other times I did.
